Working without your mask

Down Jump to Comments

Corporate life sucks… you pretend to be all professional and everything but are you really being you?

For some reason, we have been socialized to think that there is a certain way to act, talk and interact at work. Have you ever been out with your coworkers for drinks? Ever find how people are different outside of the work environment? It must be more than the alcohol!

It strikes me that we find a need to ‘fit in’ to a company when we’re not really being ourselves. What does that say about who we are? Why even work at a company where you can’t be you. It can’t be that much fun living two separate lives.

So I challenge everybody to remove their masks at work and be themselves. Come out to give 100% of who you are, not who you pretend to be when you wear your corporate mask. Have fun, laugh and enjoy.

Of course you have to do your job, but if you’ve ever enjoyed what you do, you’ll know how easy it is to do it and also how easy it becomes to excel at doing it. The result, you are happier and you do great work which makes your boss happier. Sounds like a win-win to me.

Plus, you don’t end up going home and bitching about work to your significant other… or your cat :-)

Good entrepreneurs get this… and its one of the many reasons they chose to be entrepreneurs.  For those in corporate gigs, there’s no reason why you can’t adopt this style also.  Give it a shot and see how well you do.
